Transferring keepership when the previous keeper has passed away
If the person listed as the current registered keeper of a pet has sadly passed away, their microchip record will need to be updated to reflect the new legal keeper. This often happens in a scenario where a new keeper has inherited the pet.
This ensures the pet’s details remain accurate and that you stay compliant with UK microchipping laws.
What you need to do
Add the pet to your account
Log in (or create an account) and go to Add Pet.
Enter the microchip number to trigger our online Transfer of Keepership process.
In the notes section, let us know the previous keeper has passed away.
Email us the supporting information (this helps speed things up)
A copy of the death certificate (if available)
Proof that you are now the legal keeper (e.g., will, transfer letter, adoption paperwork, vet records)
The pet’s microchip number and name
We will be in touch
Once we’ve received your request and supporting documents, we’ll contact you to finalise the transfer.
Fees
The standard £10 one-off admin fee applies once we have confirmed the transfer.
This covers full Pet Database lifetime membership for all pets you own, with no monthly or annual charges.
Why this is important
Keeps records accurate for vets, wardens, and rescues in case your pet goes missing
Legal compliance - in the UK, dogs (and cats in England) must be registered with correct keeper details on a DEFRA-compliant database
Peace of mind - ensures you can be contacted instantly if your pet is found
💡 Tip: If you have more than one pet that belonged to the previous keeper, add them all to your account at the same time so we can process the transfers together.
