I’ve rehomed my pet - how do I transfer keepership to the new owner?

Edited

If you’ve found a new home for your pet, it’s important to update their microchip record so the new keeper’s details are listed. This keeps the record accurate, ensures legal compliance, and means you won’t be contacted if the pet is found in the future.

How the process works

At Pet Database, the new keeper always starts the transfer process.
Here’s how it works:

  1. New keeper adds the pet to their account

    • They log in (or create an account) and use the pet’s microchip number when adding the pet.

    • This triggers our online Transfer of Keepership process.

  2. We contact you (the current keeper)

    • Once the transfer request is triggered, we’ll get in touch to confirm you agree to the transfer.

    • If you already know this is happening, you can speed things up by emailing us beforehand with:

      • Your consent to transfer

      • The new keeper’s name, email address, and phone number so we can follow up with them directly.

  3. Approval and payment

    • Once we have your approval, we’ll request the £15 one-off admin fee from the new keeper.

    • This fee gives them full Pet Database lifetime membership, covering all pets they own - no monthly or annual charges.

  4. Transfer complete

    • After payment, we’ll move the pet into the new keeper’s account and update the record so they are listed as the legal keeper.

💡 Tip: If you and the new keeper agree the transfer in advance, emailing us before they start the process will help us complete it much faster.
