What happens if I don’t update my details after moving?
If you move home or change your contact details but don’t update them in Pet Database, you risk breaking the law and making it harder or even impossible to be reunited with your pet if they go missing.
The legal requirement
In the UK, it’s compulsory for dogs - and for cats in England- to have their microchip details registered and kept up to date on a DEFRA-compliant database (like Pet Database).
Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to £500.
The reunification risk
If your pet goes missing and someone scans their microchip:
The finder will see outdated contact details.
Vets, rescues, and wardens may not be able to reach you.
Your pet could be delayed in getting back home — or not returned at all.
How to avoid this
Updating your details takes just a few minutes:
Log in to your account at petdatabase.com/account.
Update your address, phone number, or email.
Save your changes — these apply to all pets on your account.
💡 Tip: If you have an emergency contact added, they can be called if you can’t be reached but you should still update your own details straight away after moving.
